| Garmin Connect – the next generation of MotionBased — is now open to all Garmin fitness devices. Garmin Connect offers a better experience with a cleaner user interface and improved site performance that you’ll enjoy when analyzing your workout data on new and improved features.
As of today, 80% of all activities at MotionBased have been migrated to Garmin Connect. As a result, you can login at Garmin Connect with your MotionBased username and find most of your activities. The remaining 20% will be migrated over the next few months. Most of these are larger activities which take longer to transfer. Friday 31 July 2009 will be the last day that MotionBased will accept uploads from Garmin fitness devices. Therefore, we encourage all MotionBased customers who have a Garmin fitness device to take advantage of the new site and make the switch to Garmin Connect now, where you’ll find most of your activities already waiting. For those of you using Garmin outdoor handheld devices, MotionBased will still be available to you until Garmin Connect supports those devices in the Fall 2009. Topo Canada with DEM data has been anticipated for a couple years now, ever since Garmin announced Topo USA on DVD with DEM data. The new maps will contain the 2D NTS topo data everyone is used to but with the addition of 3D DEM data. DEM (digital elevation model) data gives a 3D look to the popular Garmin mapping by adding shaded elevation data to the maps.
Not all GPS units take advantage of the DEM data but if you have a newer Nuvi, Oregon or Colorado GPS then you are in luck. Even if your GPS cannot display the shaded relief data (DEM) you can utilize the info on your PC when you analyze your track and waypoint information.
Special Features;
- Topographic coverage of Canada, 1:50,000 scale for most areas and 1:250,000 in others
- Built in DEM and 3D shaded terrain data
- Trails and routable roads across Canada
- Point of Interest Data
- Searchable Database of cities, geographic names, summits, lakes, parks, and much more
- National, regional and local parks, forests and wilderness area info
- BaseCamp on DVD only for data management and trip planning via your PC

Pretty soon in the province of Ontario it will be against the law to use a cell phone or other mobile electronic devices while driving unless it is hands-free. The rest of Canada will be soon to follow Ontario’s precedent. Police will soon start to pull over motorist who are fumbling with their cell phone, GPS, or other electronic device while driving. The prize for being pulled over for using such mobile devices is a fine to be paid to your local government.
To avoid these unwanted tickets you can use hands-free technology such as Bluetooth, voice dialing, speech recognition or similar. Bluetooth is a common feature in the mid-range to high-end GPS systems available on the market today. Using Bluetooth you can receive and send phone calls. If you have speech recognition you can tell your GPS verbally your next destination. It costs a little extra for the hands free options but the add-on will pay for itself.
One thing to mention is that very few people know that mounting to your windshield in Canada is not allowed. This law is usually only enforced if the devices are mounted on the windshield in a way that is unsafe or is plainly in the drivers line of sight of the road. It is best to mount your GPS below the dash and not on it to ensure that you have an unobstructed view of the road. Use your common sense when using mobile electronics and you should have nothing to worry about.
Drive safe and have fun. Here are some units to look into that have some of the Hands free.
Garmin Nuvi 880 – The Garmin Nuvi 880 comes with Bluetooth capabilities to answer your calls hands free. The unit also has the best speech recognition system allowing you to speak to your GPS and tell it where you want to go with little screen interaction. Using the Garmin Nuvi 880 GPS navigator you can keep both hands on the wheel. (to limit poor audio quality it is recommended to use the external microphone capabilities of the GPS)
Garmin Nuvi 760, Nuvi 770, and Nuvi 780 – The Nuvi 700 series lacks the speech recognition but comes Bluetooth ready for hands free calling. The Nuvi 7XX series is great for its added features such as tracklogs and pre-planned routes.
*** The above devices have the capability to load external points of interest (POI). Users commonly load the locations of red-light cameras and radar hotspots to get warnings before approaching the area in question. These databases for your GPS are free in most cases and will save you money in tickets***Where to buy?
GPS City is the recommended store to purchase your next hands free enabled GPS. They offer knowledgeable service and great prices. -

If you are looking for points of interest for your next out door adventure in Canada you will want to check out GPS Culture first. GPS Culture has over 1.5 million points for Canada. These POI’s can be loaded in your GPS.
First you select the search you would like to perform. Once on the search page you can select the center point for your search. (FORMAT: Longitude<space>Latitude) Then select the search radius.
The search will look up the points in the DB and present them to you in a Table. If you would like to save them in you GPS you will need to download the points by clicking on the export CSV Link. GPS Babel can be used to convert the CSV GPS points to the file format you need. You can load the points in a Garmin, Tomtom, Magellan, Lowrance, MIO, Navman, and many more ….
If you have points to share you can upload them in CSV or ZIP format through the POI Repository. Any format is accepted in the ZIP file. Just make it a common one preferably a text file. Be sure to become a member to get advance updates on GPS news and Forum topics.
The site is new and I am sure it will get even better as more data is added. Good stuff.
